Fixed speed camera upgrade begins
in Hampshire
The Hampshire Constabulary Safer Roads Unit is reminding drivers to stick to the speed limits as it begins a programme to upgrade a number of the county’s fixed speed cameras.
Over the coming weeks and months many traditional wet film cameras, which are now over 10-years-old, will be replaced with more advanced digital technology as part of the force’s ongoing efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on Hampshire’s roads.
The cameras will be upgraded at priority sites where there is the greatest need to reduce the number of road casualties and the speed of vehicles.
The first sites to be upgraded during October are:
• A3024 Maybray King Way, Southampton - 30mph dual carriagewayIn the last three years (ending March 31, 2015) there were 16 collisions resulting in injury on this section of road, seven of which resulted in fatal or serious injuries
• A33 Kingsway, Southampton - 30mph dual carriagewayIn the last three years (ending March 31, 2015) there were 15 collisions resulting in injury on this section of road, one of which resulted in fatal or serious injuries
Like all cameras in the county, the new technology will be bright yellow and clearly visible to drivers.
Simon Gomer, Safer Roads Unit and Driver Awareness Training Manager said: “We are delighted to be upgrading many of our fixed cameras, which will help us to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the roads in Hampshire.
“We have carefully analysed casualty data and have selected the most appropriate sites to be part of the upgrade programme.
“We hope that the presence of our new cameras will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.”
A number of additional cameras will be upgraded as part of a phased rollout programme over the next 18 to 24 months.
